The Month of the Qur’an: Ramadhan Mubarak!

August 22, 2009

“O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you, as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may ward off evil. Fast a certain number of days; and for him who is sick among you, or on a journey, the same number of other days, and for those who can do it (with hardship) is a ransom, the feeding of a man in need. But who doeth good willingly, it is better for him, and that ye fast is better for you if you did but know. The month of Ramadhaan in which was revealed the Qur’aan, a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the Criterion (of right and wrong). And whosoever of you is present, i.e. alive in the month of Ramadhaan, let him fast the month and whosoever of you is sick or on a journey, let him fast the same number of other days. Allah desireth for you ease, He desireth not hardship for you, and that ye should magnify Allah for having guided you; and perchance ye shall be grateful.” (Baqarah 183 – 185)

Rasulullah Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam said: “The sleep of a fasting person is regarded as an act of ibaadah, his remaining silent is regarded as a tasbeeh, the reward for his good deeds is multiplied, his duas are accepted, and his sins are forgiven.”

Music.  The effect it has on the salient faculties of man in an Islamic context is most disconcerting.  But what is more disconcerting is the huge drive to make it Halal by particular organisations by staging concerts and even one-sided debates on the premise one is encouraging “healthy discussion”.  Make no mistake, there is a big difference between staging a healthy debate where the pro and against panels exist and the moderator is unbiased, and staging one where only one side is shown followed swiftly by an “Islamic” concert where brothers and sisters are dancing together without regard for Hijab, as happened a few months ago.
