Oppressing the Veiled and Civil Disobedience

June 17, 2011

By CoolnessofHind

“All voting is a sort of gaming, like checkers or backgammon, with a slight moral tinge to it, a playing with right and wrong, with moral questions; and betting naturally accompanies it. The character of the voters is not staked. I cast my vote, perchance, as I think right; but I am not vitally concerned that that right should prevail. I am willing to leave it to the majority. Its obligation, therefore, never exceeds that of expediency. Even voting for the right is doing nothing for it. It is only expressing to men feebly your desire that it should prevail. A wise man will not leave the right to the mercy of chance, nor wish it to prevail through the power of the majority. There is but little virtue in the action of masses of men.”.

Henry Thoreau, Resistance to Civil Government (1849)

The French Assembly voted 366 to one in favour of the ban on the veil, primarily premised upon the notion, that it oppressed women.  Such arguments have been comprehensively demolished on this blog in the past, and hence do not necessitate a regurgitation of those arguments.  Nevertheless, one would certainly question the motive of a government which wishes to pass a law against a minute minority (some estimates suggest less than 400 women wear a veil in France) in a total French population of 63 million.

Give, take… and have sabar

March 29, 2011

By Mizan al-Haq

*Al-hamdulillah, we have another addition in our authors – brother Mizan al-Haq.  al-Haq is a second year law student at a university in the West Midlands.  He brings his legal eye to diverse matters affecting the Muslim Briton of today.

We live in a society today based on a notion of give and take; this has subconsciously affected our hearts and is picking away at our Iman. As Muslims we need to learn to supress the nafs (the self) for the sake of Allah (SWT), and not become deluded by this Dunya and acknowledge that as Muslims the reality of being raised on the Day of Judgment is an undisputed end.

A Gender Question for the PM

March 13, 2011

By Farooq Bayyin

Farooq Bayyin is a 20 year old second year, engineering university student studying in the West Midlands.  He joins the ISSM Blog team to contribute his views to the discourses affecting the Muslim community in Britain today.

The UK claims to provide gender equality, with David Cameron claiming it to be a core British value in his “deplored” Munich speech, but in reality this is not the case. When we look at insurance rates men in some cases pay 100% more than women. Recently the European Court of Justice ruled ‘Taking the gender of the insured individual into account as a risk factor in insurance contracts constitutes discrimination’. Looking at the differences in pay of men and women it can be seen again gender equality does not exist. The list can go on but this is sufficient to show gender equality may be a core British value but in actual fact does not exist.

Cameron’s War: British Values for Muslims Only?

February 6, 2011

By CoolnessofHind

Whilst the Christian extremists, the EDL were in Luton doing their best to promote hate of Muslims and escalate public disorder, in a Pope Urban II style call to Europe to raise up and defeat the “Islamist Extremism” threat, David Cameron compounded, spun and distorted the reality of the situation through demogoguery and relished in the pressing of nerves of those simple-minded beings who have equated Islam to some form of “7th Century barbarism”.  Cameron declared the “Islamists Extremists” as a threat for the West – all the whilst ignoring their own imperialstic efforts and subversions of Muslim countries abroad.

And Then They Came For Me: Barelwis in the Crossfire

January 21, 2011

By CoolnessofHind

UnityIn a previous post concerning the paradox facing those who proclaimed the Barelwis as the “moderate” face of Islam, it was stated that it would be in the interest of the Muslims to unite, putting aside differences for the purpose of addressing a greater problem – the increasing anti-Muslim sentiment being created by the mass-media and the setting of a reformist, assimilationist agenda for Islam.  Once these sycophantic groups and their use had become obsolete, the collective group, i.e. Muslims, would then be attacked.

This is starting to happen now.  The use of the Barelwis has now subsided, since the inception phase of subverting and subduing Islam has passed.  The phase now is of open xenophobia, anti-Muslim rhetoric and bigotry in order to arouse the British public.
